Traditional Braces are a Tried and True Option

Traditional braces might be a great option for straightening and aligning your child’s teeth. Braces have been around for a long time. They are proven and effective, strong and durable. They’ve had advancements and improvements over the years.

Parent-Tested and Kid-Approved

Braces come with options your child might actually be excited about. Some braces include changeable color options. Your child can express himself or herself by choosing a favorite color. You can switch colors often during treatment. Rubber bands were formerly necessary on braces, but advanced braces design has changed this. For these and other reasons, many kids prefer metal braces to some of the alternatives. They also may be less expensive than alternative treatment methods, which parents appreciate too!

Some Drawbacks to Traditional Braces

Metal braces can be somewhat difficult to clean. You can’t remove them for cleaning or eating. Traditional braces can also require a mouth guard, especially when playing sports. Sometimes the metal brackets will come loose, or the wire will break. This happens, and it’s not a huge problem, but let us know if it does. Fortunately, braces can be updated and altered as needed. Your dentist may adjust your braces to keep the teeth in their gradual, intended motion during a checkup. This can cause brief periods of soreness. Braces can also take some getting used to when feeling them in your mouth. Some solutions can help.

Just let our team know of any discomfort you’re experiencing, and we’ll provide solutions to keep you as comfortable as possible. For example, you can place wax on any portion of the brackets which might be poking into your gums.

Caring For Your New Braces

Taking care of braces is easy but may require a bit more work. Braces can create areas for food and plaque build-up on your teeth. It would help if you brushed and flossed at least three times a day. You can use specialized brushes and flosses, which will help you with hard-to-reach areas during cleaning.

Watch What You Eat

Try not to eat hard or sticky foods. Caramel, taffy, nuts, hard candies, chewing ice, or meats on bones are things to avoid—cut food into small, easily-chewable pieces. When possible, eat soft foods that are less likely to make your braces come loose. Yogurts, cheeses, fruits, vegetables, and eggs are great examples.
